I had never seen wild red rhododendrons before until I hiked through Horton Plains National Park in Central Province, Sri Lanka. The flowers reminded me of my childhood home where I grew up in Eugene, Oregon, USA. We have lots of “Rodies” there. I remember thinking, “hey, maybe Oregon isn’t so different from parts of Sri Lanka after all.” That’s when I wandered past the massive “Beware of Roaming Leopards” sign.
